Unlike many other countries, United States Federal Law does not require translators to be certified to perform translation services. The same rule goes for the USCIS certified translation. Certification is available for some language pairs in the U.S., but these credentials do not hold up compared to federal licensing and certification for translation in other countries.
The American Translation Association (ATA) provides certification for some language pairs, but not all. For example, a USCIS immigration certified translator may be certified to provide translation for English to French, but not French to English.
